The
British Schools International took place at Melbourne Park Athletics Centre,
Chelmsford on Saturday 17 July, in cold and wet conditions.
Nikki Hamblin of Dorset ran 2:07.13 to win the
800m, after five days of training at the UK Athletics Endurance Performance
Centre, as part of the London Marathon Summer Endurance Camp. Hamblin’s time
beat the Championship Record of 2:07.25 set by Morag McLarty in 2001.
This followed her
third successive English Schools' gold at Gateshead the previous week
(intermediate girls 800m, 2:08.93). |

NIKKI
MEDALS IN OZ
On
the track, Nikki Hamblin took silver in the 1500m in a time of 4:31.11 at the
Commonwealth Youth Games in Australia. However, she felt the effects
of this the following day, failing to finish the 3000m.
Dorchester AC’s
NIKKI HAMBLIN had mixed feelings after picking up a silver medal behind
Scotland’s Morag MacLarty in the women’s 1500m. Hamblin was outpaced
over the final 200m and finished almost two seconds down on the gold
medallist in 4:31.11 and although disappointed not to win, she at least
earned some satisfaction after a month of injury torment. She said: "It’s
alright, I suppose, but it’s not what I wanted. I haven’t really run
for the last month,"
she added of picking up a suspected stress fracture. However, while a
stress fracture has been ruled out, England team physio John Allan has
been treating her for a foot and a back problem. |
